Packing a powerful “wow” factor, the Modern Tranquility outdoor design from award-winning exterior designer Ryan Hughes Design Build transformed a Northern Virginia home’s outdoor space into a resort-like area making every day at home feel like a vacation. Incorporating elements with luxurious fire and water features or custom textures and modern appliances created the ultimate space for outdoor gathering and entertaining with a modern and sophisticated vibe.
The homeowners envisioned a modern design with a luxurious feel inspired by their love for travel – especially to the Caribbean islands. The desire for the space to reflect their lifestyle included elements for relaxation, entertainment as well as fitness. After listening to what the homeowners pictured and using of 3D renderings, pool artist extraordinaire, Ryan Hughes, was able to create this family’s dream backyard.
Incorporated into the exterior design were “must-haves” outlined by the homeowners including a pavilion with an outdoor kitchen. A spa, fire pit, and a pool with a sun tanning ledge, bubblers and swim jets also were featured within the family-friendly outdoor space. Each resort-like element was positioned based on the expertise of the Hughes team and their signature concept of lines of sight. Through this, interiors and exteriors were blended visually for greater aesthetics.
Known for his ability to create drama in outdoor spaces, Ryan Hughes put this talent on display with the 18’ by 41’ vanishing edge pool. Travertine tile, a swim up bar and an adjoining pebble finished sun shelf completed and enhanced the vacation ambiance of the pool area. LED bubblers and lighting accent and illuminate the entire water feature adding to the enjoyment that does not have to end when the sun goes down.
Opposite the dining venue is a pool-side entertainment pavilion designed to host outdoor gatherings with a raised spa, lounge seating, and a linear fire feature. All are grouped to allow for views of the pool as well as the massive expanse of lawn that extends the home’s outdoor space. The linear fire feature not only brings warmth to outdoor get togethers; but creates a relaxed ambiance for quiet moments enjoyed in the spa area.
